MEMOIRS OF A NISEI FLOWER GROWER is a fresh and fascinating
look into a business leader who integrated all elements of
his business life to adapt to a changing marketplace. Described
as "honest and genuine," Shimi's memoirs are told
without pretense and often with humor. In a society consumed
by image and sometimes devoid of substance, Across Two Worlds
is a precious reminder that down-to-earth smarts, perseverance,
and good relationships are still key to making any organization
run well.
Reviews -
Readers of Mr. Shibata's autobiography will be inspired by
the success and courage of the
Shibata family.
(from the preface written by His Excellency Seichi Shima,
retired ambassador from Japan)
Shimi's modestly told memoir is far more relevant to issues
that are in our daily headlines than Shimi probably ever imagined
when he started to write it. Shimi tells of his family overcoming
mistreatment by government officials who believed that they
wre protecting our nation from internal security threats and
the challenges of being a first generation American who wanted
to honor his parent's rich culture while adapting to that
of their new country. Most importantly, Shimi has always maintained
his humor and this story of his search for excellence will
inspire any reader.
(Dan Gelfman, founding partner of Gelco International and
Agrodex, Ltd.)
Review of Yoshimi Shibata's recounting of his experience
as a native Californian, forced by circumstances beyond his
control to abandon a thriving floriculture business and translocation
to a World War II Northern California internment camp, identifies
the myriad capabilities functioning to elevate "Shimi"
to the exalted distinction of "great" from "good"
national floriculture business activities underscore the capabilities
serving to ensure success in his varied efforts.
(Dr. Harry Walker, former associate dean and advisor for
major programs, College of Agriculture and Environmental Science,
University of California, Davis)
[H]onest and genuine, and that is the charm of [Shimi's]
story.
(From the foreword written by Bill Hosokawa, a former editor
of the Denver Post and author of the Nisei, The Quiet Americans)
