How to enjoy long lasting cutflowers
Caring For Fresh Cut Birds of Paradise
Caring For Fresh Cut Lilies
Flowers absorb half the water they require to survive during the
first 24 hours, so this is the most crucial period, affecting the
longevity of your roses. Following these simple care instructions
will ensure that your roses receive the attention required to stay
happy and healthy-longer.
Refresh
Your Roses
- Rose will benefit from a refreshing drink to ensure their long
life in your home. As soon as you receive them, place the entire
bouquet, wrapper and all, upright in a container of lukewarm water
for an hour. Once refreshed, remove the wrapper and arrange your
roses.
Be
Careful Thorns -You might want to wear gloves to protect
your hands. If you like, you can cut the thorn tips, or strip them
with a rose stripper. This makes arranging the roses easier, because
the stems won't "catch" on one another.

Cut the Stem Ends - Using sharp pruning shears and holding
the stems underwater, cut off about an inch from each stem; cut
on the diagonal. Avoid using scissors, which can crush the stem
rather than make a clean cut.
Remove
Lower Leaves
Remove the lower leaves on the stems (leaves that'll be underwater
when the flowers are in a vase). Leaves that remain below the water
invite harmful bacteria formation.

Add Floral Preservative to the Vase - Floral preservative
will help your roses last even longer. Dissolve the contents of
one sachet of preservative into 1/2 liter of fresh, lukewarm water.
Not only does flower food feed the roses and encourages the buds
to develop, but also alleviates the growth of bacteria in the water.
Protect
Your Roses
- Keep your fresh roses in a cool place, avoid placing them in direct
sunlight, heat, humidity or draughts. Flowers cannot tolerate the
radiation from the T.V. or heat from electrical appliances as it
causes dehydration. Avoid placing flowers near fruit or cigarette
smoke, as both generate ethylene gas, which kills flowers. Snip
spent blooms as they fade, to keep your bouquet looking fresh. Once
every 2 or 3 days, remove the bouquet from the vase and give the
stems a fresh cut. Rinse the vase; then refill it with fresh, lukewarm
water.
Display
your Roses - Be sure to place your roses in a location
where you'll see and enjoy them!
